When there is a hunger to hit the open road in a vehicle that’s worthy of hills and spills, be sure to take the right soundtrack along.
“Mud on Tires”- Brad Paisley
This song is everything great about good country music. A man buys a truck and wants to try out the four-wheel drive. So he asks his girl to come along. He’s “got the perfect place in mind/It's in the middle of nowhere only way to get there/You got to get a little mud on the tires”. This is just the thing for those summer drives when the “Sun sets about nine this time of year”.
“King of the Road”- Roger Miller
This song is included for its irony of situation. The narrator has no truck and he is far from king of the highways. But it belongs on every trucker’s play list for the every man feel that the lonely roads can inspire.
“Pickup Man”-Jo Diffie
This tune celebrates the universal truth that there is, “something women like about a pick-up man”. This song celebrates the possibility of meeting any or all of your spouses in jams and the determination to never trade a truck for a Coupe DeVille.
“18 Wheels”- Kathy Mattea
“18 Wheels” is the kind of song that touches into a cornerstone of a lifestyle that few people know of but that hides a passionate group that bear further study; namely, truck drivers. “Charlie's got a gold watch, don't seem like a whole lot, /After thirty years of drivin', up and down the interstate. /But Charlie's had a good life,/ and Charlie's got a good wife. /And after tonight she'll no longer be countin' the days.” This song is about the people who hit the road for the pay and the people that sit at home waiting for them to return.
“Next to You Next to Me”- Shenandoah
Truck drivers can be a sentimental sort and this track celebrates the more affectionate side of the trucker. Shenandoah’s down home melodies are fun and loving. “Ridin' down the road in my pick-up truck/Ya better get ready cause I'm pickin' you up”, they croon. The joy of jumping into a truck is rarely about the destination it is mainly about who you are with, “We could get lost baby I don't care/I ain't worried as long as you're there”.
“Chrome”- Trace Atkins
Truck loving is not a boy only club. Many women enjoy proving the tailgate not just the food. Atkins sings about a woman who favorite color is chrome and she “got her leg up high on the bumper of [his] big black Mack truck”. The kicker? She wants, “to drive”.
